What is a Blu-ray Disc?

The name Blu-ray Disc is derived from the Blue Laser (violet coloured) used to read and write this type of disc. Because of its shorter wavelength (405 nm), substantially more data can be stored on a Blu-ray Disc than on the DVD format, which uses a red (650 nm) laser.

HD DVD or High-Definition Digital Versatile Disc is a high-density optical disc format designed for the storage of data and high-definition video. with a shorter wavelength, it can store about HD DVD is derived from the same underlying technologies as DVD. It employed a blue laser 3¼ times as much data per layer as in a normal DVD.

It was designed principally by Toshiba , and was envisaged to be the successor to the standard format DVD.
